USFS · COUNTYBeaverhead-Deerlodge NF · Beaverhead County
THIS ROUTE CROSSES WORKING RANCH LAND, IS LONG AND REMOTE, AND IS NOT A WINTER THROUGH ROUTE. The route "winds through public and private ranch lands" (onX, secondary); which stretches are private was not checked against land-status data: treat any land off the road as private unless signed otherwise. Stay on the road. Do not use ranch driveways, fields or gates as turnarounds, and slow down near homes to keep dust down (AGF research). Watch for livestock and guardian dogs (onX, secondary). The legal status of the county road legs was not read from a county road record: verify with the Beaverhead County Road Department. Winter: Recreation.gov (Bloody Dick Cabin) says "Depending on snow conditions, the route may require visitors to ski or snowmobile for 23 miles, from Jackson." Beaverhead County plows Skinner Meadows Road (Wisdom Area road report, Dec. 28–Jan. 3), but how far south: verify. Remote: about 41.8 miles (onX, secondary) with no services between Grant and Jackson (AGF research). Carry fuel, water and a full-size spare. The Bloody Dick Guard Station rental cabin is behind a locked double gate about half a mile off FS 181; that gate is for renters only (Recreation.gov). No Motor Vehicle Use Map covers this area (no Beaverhead-Deerlodge MVUM data in FS EDW). FS 181 and FS 381 are listed "open for use to all" in the FS road inventory, and no seasonal restriction was found: verify with the Dillon Ranger District (406-683-3900) for FS 181 and the Wisdom Ranger District (406-689-3243) for FS 381. Official closures, posted signs and private property override this guide. Call the Dillon Ranger District (406-683-3900) and the Wisdom Ranger District (406-689-3243) before you go, and read Know Before You Go.

WHY 1/10

Easy · Gravel Forest and County Roads

NO RECORD OF AGF DRIVING THIS ROUTE: the 1/10 is AGF's estimate, not an AGF run. AGF rates a trail by its hardest unavoidable obstacle in normal dry conditions, and no technical obstacle is documented here. The Forest Service lists FS 181 and FS 381 at maintenance level 3, suitable for passenger cars, gravel, single lane (FS EDW, queried Oct. 9, 2026), and says the Bloody Dick Cabin is "accessible by passenger vehicle, however some portions are gravel, dirt and rock" (Recreation.gov). onX (secondary) also rates the route 1. Beaverhead County bladed Bloody Dick in August 2026 and Skinner Meadows in May 2026 (county minutes). Long mileage, dust, narrow sections, ranch traffic, mud and snow are planning and condition factors, not part of the rating.
