THE SAFE-DRIVING WINDOW IS ENDING NOW, AND PORTIONS ARE IMPASSABLE WHEN WET. Visit Montana (state tourism, secondary) says the byway "can be safely driven from May through early October" and that "portions of the road are impassable when wet," attributing that to BLM. It is early October now: rain or early snow can stop travel. BLM's own page says the byway is "usually passable for all types of vehicles during the summer" and warns drivers to go "slowly and defensively, especially in wet weather, which can create slippery or hazardous conditions." No current condition report exists. There are no services and no potable water (BLM). BLM's page also says gasoline is available along the route, which contradicts "no services": assume no fuel and fill up before you leave I-15 (AGF advice). The byway crosses ranch country (Big Sky Journal, third party). Fences and gates are encountered along the route: shut every gate after you go through (Visit Montana, secondary). Big Sky Journal (third party) says campsites are on BLM parcels scattered among private land and that livestock use the road; no BLM private-land statement was found, so use a land-ownership map and do not camp or stop on private land. The byway designation does not make side roads legal: check the BLM Dillon Field Office travel map before leaving it. Beaverhead County put Stage 1 fire restrictions on private land on Aug. 10, 2026 "until further notice"; no rescission was found, and BLM fire restrictions were not found: verify before any campfire. Call the BLM Dillon Field Office (406-683-8000) before you go, and read Know Before You Go.
AGF HAS NOT RUN THIS ROUTE. This guide is built from official sources (BLM) plus clearly labeled secondary sources. No AGF field visit is behind it, and the 1/10 rating comes from those sources, not from an AGF drive.
WHAT THIS GUIDE COVERS

Dell to Highway 324

The BLM Big Sheep Creek Back Country Byway (Type I, designated 1989): Big Sheep Creek Road from Westside Frontage Road south of Dell, past Deadwood Campground, then north on Medicine Lodge Road to Highway 324 near Clark Canyon Reservoir. BLM says "more than 50 miles" and about 3 hours; AGF's record gives 52 miles, and BLM's directions add up to about 54 miles from Dell. Visit Montana (secondary) describes a two-lane gravel road with a short stretch of one-lane dirt.

NOT INCLUDED: the I-15 approach, side roads and optional side trips (their legal status is not covered by the byway designation), and any private land along the route.
WHY 1/10

Easy · Gravel Byway When Dry

AGF rates a trail by its hardest unavoidable obstacle in normal dry conditions. BLM says the byway is usually passable for all types of vehicles in summer, and no unavoidable technical obstacle is documented. Wet weather is the real hazard: portions are impassable when wet (Visit Montana, attributing BLM), which is why mud scores 5/5.

ROUTE & MAP

Getting There

From the south (BLM): take I-15 to the Dell interchange and turn south onto Westside Frontage Road. After about 2 miles, turn onto Big Sheep Creek Road, where the byway begins. Continue about 10 miles to Deadwood Campground, then nearly 12 miles to Medicine Lodge Road. Turn north on Medicine Lodge Road for about 30 miles to Highway 324, just west of Clark Canyon Reservoir. From the north, start at the Medicine Lodge Road marker on Highway 324 and reverse. BLM's page also puts Deadwood "about 14 miles southwest of Dell," which does not match its own directions: verify. Official road numbers were not found.

LOADING MAP…

The pin marks Dell, Montana (AGF record). The byway starts about 2 miles south, where Big Sheep Creek Road leaves Westside Frontage Road (BLM). No downloadable track is published: a candidate track from BLM road data has not been matched to the byway.
