Caruthers Lake
Dempsey Creek to Caruthers Lake
The 4x4 climb up the Dempsey Creek drainage to Caruthers Lake, about 1,850 feet of gain (onX), as AGF ran it with the 406 Cruisers on July 18, 2026.
Difficult · Ledges and Trees
AGF rates a trail by its hardest unavoidable obstacle in normal dry conditions. Expect tight trees, large rocks, steep rocky grades and ledges (a 2-foot ledge near the top, per an onX user report on July 18, 2026), low-range crawling and a seasonal creek crossing deep enough to reach a Tacoma's frame on 33s (same report). Recent reports say it has become harder than older 4/10 descriptions.
Snow, mud, runoff, deadfall and fire are condition changes, not part of the base rating.
Getting There
Official directions were not found. An older secondary source (SummitPost) describes it: from Deer Lodge, head south to Sager Lane and turn west, drive about 5 miles through the Montana State Prison ranch to Dempsey Creek, then take FR 8507 into the drainage. onX (secondary) starts the route near the FR 670 / 8507 junction. Roads are poorly marked and the numbers are unverified: carry a map and confirm with the Pintler Ranger District.
The pin marks Caruthers Lake (FWP/GNIS coordinate). Powell County has two lakes named Caruthers; this is the 8,100-foot lake above Dempsey Creek. No downloadable track is published.
Rig Requirements
- Stock 4x4
- No — stock clearance not recommended for full route
- High clearance
- Yes — required
- Tires
- 33-inch recommended; 35 in preferred for margin
- Rear locker
- Recommended — not yet baseline-required
- Front locker
- No
- Winch
- Recommended — self-recovery prudent
- Full-size
- Limited — full-size possible with spotter
- Body damage
- Moderate risk
High-clearance 4x4 with good A/T or M/T tires; 33s are a sensible minimum and 35s help. Sliders, skids, a full-size spare, a saw and recovery gear are recommended. Tight trees and little turnaround room make long-wheelbase and full-size rigs vulnerable.
