HIGHWAY-LEGAL ONLYFS 7330 and FS 381, yearlong (2023 MVUM copy)
USFSWisdom Ranger District
FS 7330 AND FS 381 ARE OPEN TO HIGHWAY-LEGAL VEHICLES ONLY. STOP AT THE ROAD END: THE DARKHORSE MINE FORK IS NOT A FOREST SERVICE ROAD, AND THE CONTINENTAL DIVIDE TRAIL IS A SEPARATE TRAIL, NOT THIS ROAD. FS 7330 Darkhorse Creek and FS 381 Skinner Meadows are "Roads open to highway legal vehicles only, Yearlong" (2023 MVUM copy). Non-street-legal ATVs, UTVs and OHVs are not designated on either road. Mine fork: Hiltz (secondary) mentions the Darkhorse Mine site at a fork off the lake road. That fork is not a Forest Service road in the FS road inventory: do not drive it, and stay out of old workings. Continental Divide Trail: the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail (#6111) passes through the lakes basin as a separate trail (FS trail data). It is not FS 7330: do not drive any vehicle on it. Idaho: Hiltz says, "Darkhorse Lake is only 1/4 mile from the Idaho border." FS 7330 stays in Montana (Census county data); do not continue west toward Idaho. Cabins: Hiltz says "you will come to some cabins right along the road" at about 4.4 miles; FS ownership data shows Forest Service land there, and their status is unknown: do not enter them; verify with the Wisdom Ranger District (406-689-3243). Approach: Skinner Meadows Road and FS 381 cross public and private ranch land (see the Big Hole Road 181 guide). Stay on the road; do not use ranch driveways, fields or gates as turnarounds. Remote: Hiltz says, "Keep in mind, Jackson does not have a gas station." He calls South Van Houten "the last bathroom for the rest of the trail". Carry fuel, water and a full-size spare. Winter: FS 7330 is also the Darkhorse Creek snowmobile trail (C6) (FS trail data); snow sets the practical season. FS 7330's and FS 381's vehicle class and dates come from a 2023 copy of the Forest Service MVUM data (read Oct. 13, 2026). The Forest Service's live MVUM data has no Beaverhead-Deerlodge roads, and no MVUM map for this area is online: check the 2026 MVUM with the Wisdom Ranger District (406-689-3243) before you go. Official closures, posted signs and private property override this guide. Call the Wisdom Ranger District (406-689-3243) before you go, and read Know Before You Go.
NO RECORD OF AGF DRIVING DARKHORSE CREEK ROAD. THIS 3/10 WAS SET BY THE OWNER ON OCT. 13, 2026 FROM THE SOURCES BELOW, NOT FROM AN AGF RUN. No record of AGF driving this route (AGF Verified: NO). AGF's GPS archive has no track on this route (checked Oct. 13, 2026). Everything here comes from official sources, plus clearly labeled secondary sources. AGF will re-rate it after an AGF run.

WHY 3/10

Easy · Owner-Set: High Clearance, One Secondary Source

Aaron set this road at 3/10 on Oct. 13, 2026 (owner statement), for a high-clearance road and for consistency with AGF's other Class 3 ratings. AGF has no record of driving it; the rating rests on the sources below, not an AGF run. AGF rates a trail by its hardest unavoidable obstacle in normal dry conditions, and no specific obstacle on FS 7330 is documented. The only rating source is Richard Hiltz's drive report (Montana Overland & 4x4 Adventures, secondary; no trip date given), whose page lists "Trail Rating: Class 3". On his scale, Class 3 is "the most fun four-wheeling you can expect to have in a stock 4x4", and "low range may be required often; vehicle damage is a possibility." The Forest Service lists FS 7330 at maintenance level 2, for high-clearance vehicles (2023 MVUM copy). Supporting only: AGF's ratings for Hiltz's other Class 3 trails run 3–5, most often 4; none of those AGF numbers is owner-confirmed (source: AGF calibration notes, Oct. 12, 2026, internal). Terrain scores are not rated yet. Snow, mud and deadfall are condition changes, not part of the rating.

Terrain scores (rock, mud, water, exposure, snow, pinstriping) are not rated yet for this trail.

Snow, mud, runoff, deadfall and fire are condition changes, not part of the base rating.
