Fairy Lake Road
MT-86 to Fairy Lake
Forest Road 74 (Fairy Lake Road) from MT-86 (Bridger Canyon Road) to the end of the road at Fairy Lake Campground and the Fairy Lake Trailhead, 5 miles per the Forest Service. NBC Montana (news) puts the trailhead at about mile marker 6, and AGF's record keeps a 6.2-mile figure from secondary trailhead references: verify the odometer distance. AGF plans it as about 10 miles round trip.
Easy · Steep Gravel
AGF rates a trail by its hardest unavoidable obstacle in normal dry conditions. Forest Road 74 is a steep gravel and dirt mountain road that can be rough, bumpy and slick, with no technical 4x4 obstacle in normal dry travel (AGF record). Before the 2026 work the district ranger called the road "extremely rough" (NBC Montana, news); Phase 1 covered grading, drainage, culverts and reduced grades (news). AGF has not driven the rebuilt road. Mud and snow change it completely.
Snow, mud, runoff, deadfall and fire are condition changes, not part of the base rating.
Getting There
From Bozeman, drive north on MT-86 (Bridger Canyon Road) about 21–22 miles (the Forest Service campground page says about 22.5), past Battle Ridge Pass and the Brackett Creek Y. Turn west (left) onto Fairy Lake Road, Forest Road 74. The Lower Fairy Lake Trailhead and Sno-park is about 1–1.5 miles up. Continue to the end of the road, 5 miles from the highway, where Fairy Lake Campground and the Fairy Lake Trailhead are (USFS).
The pin marks Fairy Lake Campground at the end of the road (Forest Service coordinate). It is the destination, not the MT-86 turnoff; the Fairy Lake Trailhead is about 0.14 mile away. No downloadable track is published.
