Fisher Lake (FS 242 and FS 1592)

Red Lion Road (FS 242) and Forest Road 1592 from Echo Lake Road · Flint Creek Range · Georgetown Lake, Montana
5/10AGF Difficulty · Moderate · estimate; no record of AGF driving it
~14.1 MIOne way from MT-1 (Hiltz, secondary); 11.4 on FS roads (FS road inventory)
HIGHWAY-LEGAL ONLYFS 242 and FS 1592, yearlong (2023 MVUM copy)
USFSPintler Ranger District
FS 242 AND FS 1592 ARE OPEN TO HIGHWAY-LEGAL VEHICLES ONLY. FS 242 (RED LION ROAD) CROSSES SEVERAL PRIVATE PARCELS, AND AGF HAS NOT VERIFIED A PUBLIC RIGHT-OF-WAY ACROSS THEM. Private land: FS ownership data shows non-Forest Service land at several points on FS 242, in its first 1.2 miles near Echo Lake Road and on the upper road; BLM land-status data shows private land at two of them. The Forest Service road record is continuous across those parcels, and the FS road inventory lists Forest Service jurisdiction and the county as primary maintainer for all of FS 242 (MP 0–7.98), but whether there is a public right-of-way across them is unverified: confirm with the Pintler Ranger District (406-859-3211) and Granite County (phone: verify) before you go. Stay on the road; do not stop, camp or turn around on private land. FS 242 Red Lion and FS 1592 are "Roads open to highway legal vehicles only, Yearlong" (2023 MVUM copy). Non-street-legal ATVs, UTVs and OHVs are not designated on either road, whatever vehicles appear in online trip reports. Road end: Hiltz (secondary) says, "The legal trail for full-size vehicles ends at the cabin at Fisher Lake." Do not drive past the FS 1592 road end. Cabin: onX (secondary) says, "There is a private cabin at the lake"; FS ownership data shows Forest Service land there. Treat the cabin as private and do not enter it; its status: verify with the Pintler Ranger District. Fisher Lake is classed as a reservoir (USGS GNIS via MyTopo): stay off any dam or outlet structures; operator: verify. Mining history: FS road names along FS 242 include Red Lion Mine and Greater New York Mine (FS road inventory). Stay out of old workings. Winter: the Forest Service over-snow vehicle map labels a Red Lion Snowmobile Parking Area and gives over-snow designations Dec. 2–May 15. Whether wheeled vehicles may use groomed routes in winter: verify. Snow sets the practical season. Not on this route: the road to Racetrack Lake (not covered). FS 242's and FS 1592's vehicle class and dates come from a 2023 copy of the Forest Service MVUM data (read Oct. 13, 2026). The Forest Service's live MVUM data has no Beaverhead-Deerlodge roads, and no MVUM map for this area is online: check the 2026 MVUM with the Pintler Ranger District (406-859-3211) before you go. Official closures, posted signs and private property override this guide. Call the Pintler Ranger District (406-859-3211) before you go, and read Know Before You Go.
NO RECORD OF AGF DRIVING FISHER LAKE. THIS 5/10 IS AN ESTIMATE FROM OFFICIAL AND SECONDARY SOURCES. No record of AGF driving this route (AGF Verified: NO). AGF's GPS archive has no track on this route (checked Oct. 13, 2026). Everything here comes from official sources, plus clearly labeled secondary sources. AGF will re-rate it after an AGF run.
WHAT THIS GUIDE COVERS

Echo Lake Road to the FS 1592 Road End

From MT-1, Southern Cross Road and Echo Lake Road to Red Lion Road (FS 242); FS 242 for 7.98 miles to its end; then FS 1592 for 3.43 miles to the road end at Fisher Lake. That is 11.41 miles on Forest Service roads (FS road inventory) and about 14.1 miles one way from MT-1 (Hiltz, secondary: "Length?: 14.1 Miles"), or about 28.2 miles round trip, returning the same way.

NOT INCLUDED: the road to Racetrack Lake, FS 169, anything past the FS 1592 road end, the cabin, side roads and mine workings. MT-1, Southern Cross Road and Echo Lake Road are approach roads (state GIS, not a legal-status record).
WHY 5/10

Moderate · One Steep, Loose Hill and a Notch

NO RECORD OF AGF DRIVING THIS ROUTE: the 5/10 is AGF's estimate, not an AGF run. AGF rates a trail by its hardest unavoidable obstacle in normal dry conditions. Here that is one steep, loose-rock hill with a notch at the top (where it falls along the road: verify). The deciding source is Richard Hiltz's first-hand drive report (Montana Overland & 4x4 Adventures, secondary; no trip date given). His page lists "Trail Rating: Class 3.5". He writes, "Most of this trail would be rated at Class 2", but describes "a steep section with large, loose rock" and "a bit of a gatekeeper at the top of the hill (see photos)". He adds: "At least one locker is recommended, though I have seen more than a few stock rigs make it without them." onX (secondary) rates its 2.9-mile Fisher Lake trail 4 and says: "This trail can be done in a full-size rig but a good spotter would be highly recommended for the V notch." An onX report from Aug. 10, 2024 (secondary) says: "The V-notch was not passable for our Teryx, and requires someone with a more capable vehicle, solid skills and a spotter." Supporting only: AGF's ratings for Hiltz's other Class 3.5 trails (Caruthers Lake 6, McCarty Creek 4, Lava Mountain 5, and Hogback Lookout, which the owner set at 5) run 4–6 (median 5); apart from Hogback, none of those AGF numbers is owner-confirmed (source: AGF calibration notes, Oct. 12, 2026, internal). No source mentions a winch. Snow, mud and erosion are condition changes, not part of the rating.

ROUTE & MAP

Getting There

From MT-1 near Georgetown Lake, take Southern Cross Road; Hiltz (secondary) says to bear left onto Echo Lake Road about 0.8 mile from MT-1. Red Lion Road (FS 242) leaves Echo Lake Road on the right; Hiltz's two route pages give different distances along Echo Lake Road (1.3 miles and about 2 miles): verify. FS 242 begins at about 46.2240, -113.2516 (FS road inventory). Follow FS 242 northeast 7.98 miles to its end at about 46.2963, -113.1510, where FS 1592 begins (FS road inventory). The road to Racetrack Lake also leaves near this junction (Hiltz); it is not covered by this guide. Follow FS 1592 3.43 miles to the road end at 46.3100, -113.1016, at Fisher Lake. Return the same way.

LOADING MAP…

The pin marks the FS 1592 road end at Fisher Lake, where vehicles stop (FS road inventory end coordinate; Forest Service land per FS ownership data; not field-checked). It replaces AGF's earlier pin, which had no cited source. The route starts on Echo Lake Road at about 46.2240, -113.2516. No downloadable track is published.

Sources & Review

Last reviewed Oct. 13, 2026. No alert names the route, but FS 242 and FS 1592 are highway-legal only, FS 242 crosses several private parcels where AGF has not verified a public right-of-way, and the 2026 MVUM has not been confirmed. There is no record of AGF driving Fisher Lake; the 5/10 is an estimate from official and secondary sources.

AGF ratings describe normal, dry-condition difficulty. They do not mean a route is legal, open or passable today. Spot something out of date? Use the Contact page.
