Flathead Pass
Over the Pass, West to East
The Flathead Pass Road crossing of the northern Bridger Range, over Flathead Pass (6,842 ft, USGS GNIS), about 4 miles (AGF record; onX, third party, also gives 4). Trailforks (third party) lists 4.3 miles on the west side and 5.9 on the east. AGF has not fixed the exact endpoints: verify.
Easy · Ruts on the West Side
AGF rates a trail by its hardest unavoidable obstacle in normal dry conditions. The west flank has a short, deeply rutted loose-rock climb and washout section that can lift a wheel and needs deliberate line choice; the rest is uneven hard dirt and rock, and the east side is much easier (AGF record). TrailsOffroad (third party) places a deeply rutted, angled climb about halfway to the summit. onX (third party) rates it 2; AGF rates it 3 because of the 2026 rutting and washout reports. AGF has not driven it.
Snow, mud, runoff, deadfall and fire are condition changes, not part of the base rating.
Getting There
West side (harder; Outside Bozeman, secondary): from I-90 in Bozeman, exit at N. 19th Ave. and go north on Springhill Road. Pavement ends after about 11 miles, and a Flathead Pass Forest Service sign is at about mile 19. onX (third party) says the trail starts after you turn off Rocky Mountain Road onto Flathead Pass Road. Climb east to the pass. East side (easier; community sources): descend Flathead Creek Road to MT-86 (Bridger Canyon Road), then go south to Bozeman or north toward Wilsall. Exact mileages: verify.
The pin marks the Flathead Pass summit (USGS GNIS point, 6,842 ft). It is a pass point, not a trailhead; onX (third party) puts the west start about 3.7 miles west. No downloadable track is published.
Rig Requirements

- High clearance
- Recommended
- Tires
- 31-inch minimum
- Rear locker
- No
- Front locker
- No
- Winch
- No
- Full-size

- Moderate risk
A stock 4x4 is the baseline; high clearance and good A/T tires are recommended, airing down helps, and low range is useful on the west climb and descent (AGF record). Full-size trucks can fit, but the west side is one vehicle wide with deep ruts and little passing room (AGF record). Carry a full-size spare or tire repair and basic recovery gear. Avoid winter travel.
