SNOW SEASON IS STARTING, AND THERE IS NO CURRENT CONDITION REPORT. Neither the Bitterroot nor the Nez Perce-Clearwater lists a closure for FR 468 (checked Oct. 8, 2026), but that is not confirmation that the road is open: neither forest has posted a current condition report. The Bitterroot corridor page (last updated May 29, 2026) still says "This corridor's access is restricted due to snow." That notice dates from spring and its current accuracy is unknown, but the snow season has begun: confirm with the West Fork Ranger District. The Forest Service says snow typically falls from early October into July, storms are possible in any month, the road is not plowed, and early storms can close it with little notice. Call the West Fork Ranger District (406-821-3269) and the Red River Ranger District (208-842-2245) before you go. The Forest Service does not recommend the road for low-clearance vehicles, motor homes or vehicles towing trailers: it is rough, steep, single-lane and mostly unimproved, with hairpin turns and few turnouts. There is no fuel and no services for more than 100 miles (the USFS brochure says 117), most sites have no potable water, cell coverage is spotty to nonexistent, GPS may be unreliable and emergency response may be delayed. The road runs between the Selway-Bitterroot and Frank Church-River of No Return wildernesses, where motor vehicles are prohibited: stay on FR 468 and authorized side roads. Stage 2 fire restrictions took effect on the Bitterroot on Aug. 7, 2026 (Nez Perce Pass Trailhead page); whether they have been lifted is unconfirmed, so check before any campfire. WHAT THIS GUIDE COVERS

Darby to Elk City on FR 468

The full Magruder Corridor on Forest Road 468, from West Fork Road south of Darby, Montana, west to Red River Road (FR 222) near Elk City, Idaho. The Nez Perce-Clearwater page and the USFS brochure give 101 miles; the Bitterroot page gives 95. The Forest Service estimates 6–8 hours (corridor page) or 8–10 hours (brochure) of driving at 12–15 mph, and recommends two days with an overnight stay.

NOT INCLUDED: side roads such as Paradise Road (FR 6223), Elk Mountain / Green Mountain Lookout (FR 285), Burnt Knob (FR 468-C, 4WD only), Hells Half Acre (FR 224, steep and rocky) and Soda Creek (FR 1172), and anything inside the wilderness.
WHY 3/10

Easy · Remote, Not Technical

AGF rates a trail by its hardest unavoidable obstacle in normal dry conditions. The Forest Service describes a rough, steep, winding, single-lane, mostly unimproved road and recommends high clearance, but it is not a rock-crawling route. The difficulty comes from distance, remoteness, a narrow road with few turnouts, and rocks, washouts, downed trees and brush. The 3/10 is provisional (medium confidence in AGF's record); AGF last drove it on July 12, 2024. Snow or mud makes it much harder: the Forest Service says to use 4WD when the road is snow-covered or muddy.

ROUTE & MAP

Getting There

Montana (east) end: from Darby, go south 4.3 miles on US-93, turn right (south) onto West Fork Road and go about 14.3 miles, then turn west onto FR 468 (Nez Perce Road), 0.8 mile south of the West Fork Ranger Station. On FR 468 it is about 16.1 miles to the Nez Perce Pass Trailhead, about 31 miles to Deep Creek Campground and about 34.8 miles to Magruder Crossing (USFS). Idaho (west) end: from Grangeville, take Idaho Highway 14 toward Elk City, then Red River Road (FR 222) toward the old Red River Ranger Station, about 65 miles from Grangeville; FR 468 starts 0.3 mile south of the station (USFS). Do not park at the Nez Perce Pass helicopter landing zone.

LOADING MAP…

The pin is an unverified point from AGF's trail record. It does not match the Forest Service coordinates for the Nez Perce Pass Trailhead or Deep Creek Campground, it is not the start of the route, and it may not be on FR 468. No downloadable track is published: Forest Service road data for FR 468 covers only about 56–60 of the described 95–101 miles, and the gap is not yet explained.

A high-clearance stock 4x4 is the baseline. Long or wide rigs face a single-lane road with hairpins and few turnouts. Carry a full-size spare, recovery gear, a chainsaw for deadfall (the Forest Service suggests one), extra fuel, water and food, paper or downloaded maps, and a satellite messenger or other remote communications (AGF advice). • Bear country: Bitterroot NF food storage order 25-BRF-01 applies Mar. 1–Dec. 1 on the Montana side; black bears and grizzlies may be present. Idaho-side food storage rules were not found; store food the same way.
  • Expect heavy traffic during Idaho hunting season, mid-September to mid-November (USFS).
  • A 2022 Forest Service notice says some Idaho-side corridor roads may close to wheeled vehicles from Dec. 1 for winter grooming; whether that applies this winter is unverified.
  • Red River Ranger District has weekday construction closures (9 a.m.–6 p.m.) on NFSR 1875, 9824, 9829 and 492 through Oct. 15, 2026. They are not FR 468; whether they affect the approaches is unverified.
  • Slides and washouts happen: a 2015 mudslide at Scimitar Creek, west of Nez Perce Pass, affected travel (NBC Montana, secondary).
  • The road does not follow the exact line of the historic Southern Nez Perce Trail. Leave the Magruder Ranger Station and other historic sites as you find them.
  • Hay, straw or mulch must be certified weed-free (order R1-2025-01).
