Skalkaho Pass

MT-38 Skalkaho Highway · Sapphire Mountains · Hamilton to Philipsburg, Montana

SEASONAL CLOSURE AHEAD: CHECK MDT 511 BEFORE YOU GO. MDT seasonally closes MT-38 over Skalkaho Pass from milepost 14 to 38. There is no winter maintenance, and travel is prohibited while it is closed: do not drive around the gates. It typically closes after hunting season in late November (Visit Montana, secondary, gives Nov. 28) and reopens the Friday before Memorial Day; the 2026 closing date has not been announced. AGF could not check MDT 511 live for this review. Two 2026 wildfires burned along the lower west corridor. The Black Bear Fire closed the highway until Aug. 12, when it reopened with pilot cars (NBC Montana, secondary news), and the Nature Grove Fire brought necessary-traffic-only travel (USFS) and then pilot-car delays of up to 20 minutes in late August (Montana Right Now, secondary news). Whether pilot cars or flagging are still in use is unverified; expect hazard trees and debris or rockfall after rain. Trailers are not allowed over the pass because of narrow curves and limited pull-outs (Visit Montana, secondary; MDT wording not found); a campground's trailer length limit does not mean you may tow across. Check MDT 511 (511mt.net or 1-800-226-7623) and Bitterroot National Forest alerts on the day of travel, and read Know Before You Go.
CHANGED SINCE AGF'S RUN: AGF last drove it on July 20, 2019. The 2026 Black Bear and Nature Grove fires burned along the lower west corridor since then, so roadside conditions may differ from AGF's notes.
WHAT THIS GUIDE COVERS

Hamilton to Philipsburg over the Pass

MT-38 from US-93 at Grantsdale, south of Hamilton, over Skalkaho Pass to MT-1 at Porter's Corner, south of Philipsburg: about 54 miles (AGF record; Wikipedia, secondary, gives 53.835). About 20 of the 26 miles from US-93 to the summit are gravel (Visit Montana, secondary).

NOT INCLUDED: Forest Service side roads such as Skalkaho-Rye (FS 75), FS 711, FS 720 and Gird Point (FS 714), and any travel off MT-38 in the Skalkaho Game Preserve.
WHY 1/10

Easy · Narrow Mountain Road

AGF rates a trail by its hardest unavoidable obstacle in normal dry conditions. In the dry season MT-38 is passenger-car compatible, with no meaningful technical obstacle; gravel, washboard and potholes occur. The real hazards are narrow curves, limited pull-outs and mountain exposure. AGF expects steep drop-offs with few guardrails on the gravel section (not confirmed by MDT). Snow and mud are condition changes, and the road is closed in winter.

ROUTE & MAP

Getting There

From Hamilton, drive US-93 south about 2–3 miles to Grantsdale and turn left (east) onto MT-38. Black Bear Campground is on the right at about 12.9 miles (USFS). Skalkaho Falls is beside the road on the left about 22 miles from US-93 (Explore the Bitterroot, secondary), and the summit is about 26 miles from US-93 (Visit Montana, secondary). Continue east and down to MT-1. From the east, MT-38 leaves MT-1 at Porter's Corner, about 6 miles south of Philipsburg (Wikipedia, secondary). In winter only about the first 10 miles from the west are plowed (Visit Montana and Explore the Bitterroot, both secondary).

The pin marks the approximate Skalkaho Pass summit from AGF's record; it has not been checked against an MDT or USGS coordinate. No downloadable track is published: a partial 2019 AGF track likely matches this route but has not been reconciled with MDT route data.
