South Meadow Creek
FS 1221 to South Meadow Creek Lake
The drive up South Meadow Creek, where County Road #29 becomes FS 1221 at the forest boundary, to South Meadow Creek Lake at the end of the road (FWP). Distances differ: AGF's record and onX (third party) give 3.1 miles, and Backcountry Post (third party) puts the Forest Service section at about 3 miles below the lake, but the 2017 MVUM lists FS 1221 as MP 0–5.19. Where each figure starts is unconfirmed: verify.
Moderate · Rock Field at the Top
AGF rates a trail by its hardest unavoidable obstacle in normal dry conditions. This 4/10 is provisional (AGF assessment from current sources): trail guides describe an easy first half that becomes increasingly rocky, ending in a difficult rock field and final climb near the lake that can challenge stock-clearance vehicles. onX (third party) also rates it 4. Community reports differ: a stock Isuzu Trooper and a stock 4Runner "made it up and down with some scraps and bruises but nothing serious" on Sept. 25, 2026 (onX, third party), while the Aug. 24, 2026 report said a stock full-size vehicle stands "no chance of getting through without damage." Snow and runoff change it completely.
Snow, mud, runoff, deadfall and fire are condition changes, not part of the base rating.
Getting There
From US-287 near McAllister, take South Meadow Creek County Road #29. At the forest boundary the county road becomes FS 1221; follow it to the lake (FWP). Backcountry Post (third party, 2014) says FS 1221 begins about a mile below the Missouri-McKee Mine, about 3 miles below the lake. The mileage from US-287 to the forest boundary was not found: verify.
The pin is FWP's South Meadow Creek Lake coordinate, at the end of the road where the drive stops. It is not the start of the route; no official trailhead or forest-boundary coordinate was found. No downloadable track is published: AGF's 2016 GPS was not recovered, and no other track has been checked.
