A practical Bozeman-area guide to amateur radio, GMRS and FRS—what each service does, which frequencies matter locally, and how to get legal before heading beyond cell coverage.
A two-way radio is not a complete rescue plan. Terrain can block VHF and UHF signals. For remote travel, carry a satellite messenger or PLB, leave a route plan with someone responsible, and use 911 whenever conventional service is available.
Pick the right lane
FRS is the easiest. GMRS is the practical upgrade for most 4x4 groups. Amateur radio offers the widest capability, but requires an exam and more operator knowledge.
Grab-and-go convoy radio
Best for loaner radios, short trail convoys, campsites and simple family use.

What are you trying to do?
Start with FRS—or GMRS for regular trips.
FRS works when everyone needs a simple loaner. A GMRS license is the better long-term option for a recurring group because it permits purpose-built mobiles, better antennas and repeaters.
Why a license exists
Radio spectrum is shared infrastructure. Licensing creates accountability and ensures operators understand the boundaries of the service they use.
Interference
Incorrect frequencies, bandwidth, power or programming can disrupt other users—including coordinated repeaters.
Identification
Ham and GMRS call signs identify the responsible licensee and make shared channels easier to manage.
Knowledge
The amateur exam covers operating rules, radio basics and safety so operators know what their equipment is doing.
Privileges
The license unlocks legal use of higher power, repeaters, external antennas or additional frequency bands, depending on service.
Get legal
The GMRS path is paperwork only. The ham Technician path adds a 35-question multiple-choice exam based on a public question pool.
GMRS license // no test
- Create an FCC CORES account and obtain an FRN. Keep the login information secure.
- Open FCC ULS License Manager and choose “Apply for a New License.” Select radio service code ZA — General Mobile Radio Service.
- Complete the application and pay the FCC fee. Current application fee: $35.
- Wait for the FCC call sign to appear in ULS before transmitting as GMRS. A normal individual GMRS license runs for ten years and covers eligible immediate family members.
- Identify properly. Transmit the assigned GMRS call sign at the end of a communication and at least every 15 minutes during a longer series of transmissions.
Ham Technician license // exam required
- Create an FCC account and FRN before the exam. Use the same legal name on your FCC record and exam registration.
- Study the current 2026–2030 Technician pool. It became effective July 1, 2026. Free practice tools and the complete public question pool are linked below.
- Book an in-person or remote exam. The Technician exam has 35 questions; 26 correct answers are required to pass.
- Pay the exam-session fee. ARRL VEC’s 2026 fee is $15; other exam teams may use a different fee structure.
- After passing, pay the FCC application fee. Current new-license fee: $35. Do not transmit until the FCC grants the license and call sign.
- Program carefully and join the local community. The Gallatin Ham Radio Club offers local knowledge, repeaters, meetings, nets and mentoring.
FRS // license by rule
FRS does not require an individual FCC application or call sign. Legal operation depends on using an FCC-certified FRS transmitter as designed. FRS radios have fixed antennas, cannot use repeaters and automatically follow the FRS channel power limits.
Important: A programmable ham handheld is not automatically a legal FRS or GMRS radio merely because it can be tuned to the same frequency. Use equipment certified for the radio service in which you are transmitting.

FRS ↔ GMRS channel map
Channels 1–22 use the same center frequencies in both services. The difference is the certified equipment, power, bandwidth, antenna options and repeater privileges—not a separate “GMRS version” of the frequency.

GMRS repeater pairs
A repeater-capable GMRS radio listens on the 462 MHz output and transmits 5 MHz higher on the paired 467 MHz input.

“Privacy codes” are not private
CTCSS and DCS tones only control which signals open your speaker. Anyone monitoring the channel without your tone can hear the conversation. The tone also does not reserve the channel or prevent interference.
- Listen before transmitting.
- Keep messages short and clear.
- Use plain language during an emergency.
- Never assume a silent speaker means an unused channel.
Agree on a primary channel, backup channel and tone before departure. Channel 20 with a 141.3 Hz tone is used as a travel convention by some GMRS operators, but it is not exclusive, guaranteed or an FCC-designated distress channel.
Build a trail radio plan
A boring, written communications plan beats frantic programming at a dusty trailhead.
Before departure
- Choose the radio service everyone can legally use.
- Set one primary and one backup channel.
- Record any repeater output, input, tone and owner policy.
- Test every radio outside the vehicles.
- Carry charged spare batteries and 12-volt charging.
- Write down the group leader’s call sign where required.
On the trail
- Use short transmissions: who you are calling, who you are, then the message.
- Keep the convoy spaced so one radio can relay around terrain.
- Stop in a safe location before troubleshooting equipment.
- Move higher or into line-of-sight before assuming the radio failed.
- Use your required FCC identification.
- For a life-threatening incident, prioritize 911 or satellite SOS.
Legal guardrails
Owning a radio, receiving a signal or finding a frequency online does not automatically authorize transmission.
Use certified equipment
FRS and GMRS transmitting equipment must be certified for the applicable Part 95 service. A wide-open programmable radio is not a universal legal transmitter.
Stay inside privileges
A Technician license provides extensive VHF/UHF privileges, but not every frequency a radio can display. Check the current amateur band plan and FCC rules.
Weather is receive-only
NOAA weather channels are for monitoring. Never transmit on 162.500 MHz or any other NOAA Weather Radio frequency.
Repeaters have owners
“Open” means available under the owner’s rules. Do not interfere, kerchunk repeatedly, or assume internet directory data is permanent.
No business traffic on ham
Amateur radio is a noncommercial service. Routine business dispatch and pecuniary communications belong on an appropriate service.
Emergency flexibility is narrow
Do not treat an emergency exception as a general permission slip. Get licensed, practice beforehand and keep reliable backup methods.
