So You Think You Want a 100 Series
You probably do. The 100 Series combines a smooth V8, full-time four-wheel drive, serious durability and enough comfort to make an 80 Series feel like farm equipment. It is also now an old luxury truck carrying every maintenance decision made since 1998.
The central buying rule
Condition Beats Trim Level
A rear-locked 1999, a five-speed 2004 and a VVT-i 2007 are all attractive for different reasons. None of those features matter if the truck has an unknown timing belt, brittle heater tees, unsafe brakes, split CV boots, a tired cooling system and wiring installed by somebody who feared both fuses and organization.

Translation: the badge and model year tell you what it was. Records and inspection tell you what it is.
Know what you are looking at
U.S.-Market 100 Series Basics
The U.S. 100 Series ran from 1998 through 2007 as the Toyota Land Cruiser and Lexus LX470. All use the 4.7-liter 2UZ-FE V8, but the transmission, traction systems, differential design, electronics, suspension equipment and engine controls changed significantly during the run.
The rear-locker years
- Introduction of the U.S.-market 100 Series with the 4.7-liter 2UZ-FE V8.
- Four-speed A343F automatic, full-time four-wheel drive and a lockable center differential.
- An electric rear differential locker was optional.
- The front differential used the earlier two-pinion design.
- Front suspension changed from the 80 Series solid axle to independent torsion-bar suspension.
The A-TRAC transition
- Vehicle Stability Control, Active Traction Control and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution were added for 2000.
- The factory rear locker was no longer offered in the U.S.
- The front differential changed to a stronger four-pinion design.
- The four-speed automatic remained.
- Later convenience equipment included auto-up/down windows, electrochromic mirror and optional navigation.
The five-speed sweet spot
- Major 2003 refresh with revised grille, bumpers, dashboard, steering wheel and available curtain airbags.
- Five-speed A750F automatic replaced the four-speed.
- Drive-by-wire throttle, revised steering and stronger driveshafts were added.
- Differential gearing changed from 4.30 to 4.10.
- For 2004, Toyota specified WS transmission fluid and removed the transmission dipstick.
- Seventeen-inch wheels became standard after the refresh; eighteen-inch wheels became standard for 2005.
The final and most powerful U.S. 100s
- VVT-i, variable intake control and secondary air injection were added to the 2UZ-FE for 2006.
- Revised headlights, grille, rear lighting and brake-control systems.
- Tire-pressure monitoring was added.
- Active Height Control became optional on the Land Cruiser.
- The five-speed automatic continued through the final 2007 model year.
The Lexus version is still a real Land Cruiser
- The LX470 shares the core frame, 2UZ-FE drivetrain and four-wheel-drive architecture with the Land Cruiser.
- Active Height Control and Adaptive Variable Suspension were standard from the beginning.
- Front and rear automatic climate control, additional luxury trim, body cladding and Lexus-specific gauges were standard or more common.
- Later trucks added increasingly integrated navigation, audio, climate and convenience electronics.
- Used LX470s can be a better value than equivalent Toyota-badged trucks—provided the AHC and electronics are properly inspected.

What Owners Complain About
These are not guarantees of failure. They are the systems that repeatedly appear in buyer threads, baseline discussions and long-running technical FAQs. A truck can reach very high mileage without every item failing—but age, heat, use and maintenance history still collect their bill eventually.
Heater tees and coolant loss
The plastic rear-heater hose tees become brittle with age. A failed tee can dump coolant quickly, overheat the engine and turn an inexpensive preventive job into a very expensive day.
Timing belt, water pump and front-engine service
Toyota's maintenance schedule calls for timing-belt replacement at 90,000 miles on the 2UZ-FE. Buyers commonly bundle the belt with the water pump, tensioner, idlers, seals and related cooling parts. A sticker without an invoice is a clue—not proof.
Brake master, accumulator and booster pump
The 100 uses an electronically assisted hydraulic brake assembly. Warning lights, a buzzer, abnormal pump cycling, a changing pedal or questionable brake-fluid history deserve immediate professional diagnosis. This is not the system to evaluate by optimism.
AHC, globes, sensors and incorrect loading
AHC should raise and lower correctly, sit level and ride smoothly. Proper inspection goes beyond pressing the height switch: fluid condition, sensor function, system pressures, torsion-bar adjustment, rear spring support and accumulator-globe health all matter.
CV boots, axles and front differential mounts
Split CV boots sling grease and can shorten joint life. Clunks, vibration and movement may also involve differential mounts, control-arm bushings or worn driveline components. Inspect the boots at full steering lock.
Steering rack leaks and bushings
Power-steering leaks, worn rack bushings and movement at the rack can create loose steering, shimmy or clunks. Larger tires can make existing wear more obvious. Check the rack, hoses, fluid and mounts.
Exhaust ticks and manifold leaks
A tick on cold start can point to a manifold, gasket, flange or exhaust-joint leak. Confirm the actual source; loose spark plugs and other leaks can sound similar. Correct diagnosis turns this from a mystery into a price.
Starter contacts under the intake
Starter contacts can wear, while the starter itself lives beneath the intake manifold. Slow cranking, intermittent clicks or a seller who has already warmed the truck deserve a proper cold-start test.
Throttle and accelerator-position sensors
Slee identifies early accelerator- and throttle-position sensor faults that can cause poor or absent throttle response. Verify clean response during the road test and scan stored codes before buying.
The early two-pinion differential
Early U.S. trucks used a two-pinion front differential; Toyota changed to a four-pinion unit for 2000. Plenty survive normal use, but hard wheelspin, large tires and aggressive off-road driving increase concern.
Navigation, audio and climate integration
On navigation-equipped trucks—especially LX470s—the screen, audio and climate controls can be interconnected. Test every button, display, speaker, camera and HVAC mode. Aftermarket replacements can be possible but not always simple.
Rubber, suspension and accessory creep
Control-arm bushings, hoses, mounts, shocks, fan-drive parts, alternators, A/C components and fuel-system pieces do not share one expiration date. A high-mile truck may be fully baselined—or it may be selling the next owner every original part at once.

Strong reasons to walk away
- Current overheating, rapid coolant loss, contamination or evidence the engine was repeatedly overheated.
- Brake warning buzzer, unsafe pedal behavior, active brake-system faults or a seller dismissing brake concerns.
- Transmission slipping, harsh engagement, serious differential noise or major driveline vibration.
- Structural frame rust, unsafe repairs or substantial accident damage hidden beneath accessories.
- Burned, unfused or chaotic wiring throughout the truck.
- A seller who refuses a cold start, full road test, diagnostic scan or independent inspection.
Usually negotiation or baseline items
- Timing-belt service is due or undocumented, but the truck otherwise tests well.
- Heater tees, hoses, radiator or fan-drive parts have unknown age.
- Split CV boots, worn suspension bushings or diagnosed steering-rack leakage.
- Tired AHC globes, sensors or fluid after proper system diagnosis.
- A confirmed exhaust leak, cracked seat leather, antenna failure or tired convenience features.
- Old tires, neglected fluids and predictable maintenance that can be safely completed immediately.

Check each item only after you personally verify it or receive credible documentation. The score is a screening aid—not a mechanical verdict and definitely not permission to skip a PPI.
What to do after buying one
Baseline Before You Build
A roof tent, bumper and 35s do not improve an unknown timing belt, brittle heater plumbing or tired brakes. Establish a trustworthy mechanical starting point before adding weight, tire size and remote travel.
Document and scan
Record mileage, leaks, tire dates, fluid condition, modifications and service history. Scan all available modules—not only the check-engine light.
Protect the engine
Confirm the timing belt, water pump and front-engine service. Replace heater tees, questionable hoses and other age-unknown cooling components before remote use.
Make it stop
Inspect the complete brake master/booster/accumulator system, flush fluid correctly and resolve every warning, pump-cycling or pedal concern before normal driving.
Rebuild the front-end confidence
Inspect CV boots, axles, differential mounts, control-arm bushings, ball joints, wheel bearings, steering rack, power-steering lines and alignment.
Service suspension and driveline
Evaluate AHC correctly when equipped. Service differentials, transfer case, propeller shafts, transmission as appropriate and every grease point specified for the truck.
Then modify it
Choose tires, suspension, armor and recovery equipment around the truck's real use. Build a reliable 100 Series—not a rolling collection of algorithm-approved accessories.
Frequently argued questions
100 Series Buyer FAQs
What is the best year?
There is no universal winner. The 1998–1999 trucks can have the factory rear locker. The 2000–2002 trucks add A-TRAC and the four-pinion front differential. The 2003–2005 trucks add the five-speed automatic. The 2006–2007 trucks add VVT-i and more late-model equipment. The best year is usually the best-maintained truck with the systems you actually want.
Is the LX470 a real 100 Series?
Yes. The LX470 shares the core platform and drivetrain with the Land Cruiser. It adds standard AHC/AVS, more luxury equipment, Lexus-specific body trim and—in later years—more integrated electronics. The badge changes the inspection list, not the family tree.
Should I avoid AHC?
Not automatically. Healthy AHC rides extremely well and provides useful height control. Avoid neglected, incorrectly adjusted or poorly diagnosed AHC. A proper evaluation checks fluid, system pressures, ride height, sensors, rear spring support and globe condition. A conventional-suspension conversion can be valid, but deletion is not proof the rest of the truck was maintained well.
How many miles is too many?
There is no magic cutoff. The 2UZ-FE can run a very long time, but high mileage and age can bring cooling parts, rubber, suspension, steering, brakes, accessories and driveline service into the same ownership window. A documented 250,000-mile truck may be a better buy than a neglected 140,000-mile example.
Do I need the 1998–1999 rear locker?
No. It is desirable and useful, but the later A-TRAC system is surprisingly effective when healthy. Buy the locker because your intended use benefits from it—not because the advertisement says “locked.” Verify engagement, and remember that the early trucks also have the two-pinion front differential.
Is independent front suspension a dealbreaker?
No. The 100 Series gives up some solid-axle simplicity and articulation in exchange for better ride, steering and daily-driver behavior. The trade is a different maintenance list: CV boots, rack bushings, control-arm bushings, ball joints, torsion-bar setup and front-differential mounts.
Is an overdue timing belt an automatic walk-away?
Not necessarily, but it is immediate maintenance and a negotiating item. Verify the current condition, service history and whether related components were replaced. Budget a complete, quality service rather than paying for the seller's promise that “these engines go forever.”
Should I buy stock or modified?
Buy quality and documentation. A properly engineered truck with known suspension, armor, wiring and gearing can be excellent. A stock truck can still be neglected, while a modified truck can either save you money or transfer somebody else's unfinished experiment into your driveway.
Can I daily-drive a 100 Series?
Absolutely—after baselining. The 100 is quieter, faster and more comfortable than earlier Cruisers. You still need to accept fuel use, old-luxury-truck repairs, aging electronics and the cost of maintaining a heavy four-wheel drive properly.
What about the solid-axle 105 Series?
The 105 is a related solid-front-axle model sold in other markets, not the normal U.S.-market Land Cruiser/LX470 covered by this page. Imported trucks can have different engines, drivetrains, parts availability, legal requirements and inspection needs. Do not apply this U.S. 100 Series checklist blindly to an imported 105.
What should I replace first?
Safety and engine protection come first: brake-system concerns, heater tees, cooling system, timing belt history, tires, steering, CV boots and critical fluids. A stereo, lift and bumper can wait until the truck is trustworthy.

A good 100 Series may be one of the best combinations of durability, comfort and real four-wheel-drive capability ever sold. A neglected one is still an aging luxury V8 with expensive systems, old rubber and excellent resale mythology.
