Sold • Yellow Honda Beats With Zebra Interiors • Bring a Trailer & Cars & Bids
Crack PipeOr Nice Price?
Seventy-seven auctions, ten years and one very loud seat fabric. A $6,969 dealer Beat, a $7,700 two-time Bring a Trailer alum and a $9,100 California flip, scored against every Honda Beat auction I could find.

This week's premise
Yellow Paint, Zebra Seats, Two Auction Sites
The Honda Beat was sold new in Japan from 1991 to 1996. It's a mid-engine kei roadster with a 656cc three-cylinder, individual throttle bodies, an 8,500 rpm redline and about 63 horsepower. It was the last new car Soichiro Honda approved. It's also small enough to park in a bike lane, which I do not recommend.
The spec everybody pictures is Carnival Yellow with the black-and-gray zebra-print cloth seats. Bright yellow outside, safari inside. That's the one I care about.
So instead of three ads, this one goes back through every ended Bring a Trailer and Cars & Bids auction for a Honda Beat. That's 77 auctions, from April 2016 to this month. Then I picked three yellow, zebra-interior Beats to score the usual way.
Full disclosure: I own a yellow 1991 Beat. That makes me biased, emotionally invested and very good at spotting a torn driver's seat bolster.
The market
What Honda Beats Actually Sell For
Here's every one of them. Each dot is an auction, and you can hover over one for the details. The dashed line is the median sale for that year.
The market • What it says
A 2022 Spike, Then Right Back to Eight Grand
Before 2021, a Beat was a $5,000-to-$7,500 car. Then 2021 and 2022 happened to everything with a Japanese import sticker. The 2022 median hit $11,000, and a 63,000-mile Beat in Modesto brought $15,000. It's still the record.
It didn't last. The median fell to $8,500 in 2023 and $7,450 in 2024. Over the last 12 months, 13 Beats sold for a median of $8,200, up from $7,550 across 8 sales the 12 months before. That's a recovery, not a bubble.
Yellow is the color everybody wants and nobody pays extra for. Since 2023, 10 yellow Beats sold for a median of $7,788. The other 37 sold for $7,801. The zebra seats don't move the needle either, because nearly every Beat has them.
Miles only matter at the low end. Since 2023, Beats with under 30,000 known miles sold for a median of $9,500. Everything else, from 30,000 miles to over 100,000, landed between $7,400 and $7,800.
One more pattern, and it's the opposite of the LX450: Cars & Bids runs higher. Its 45 Beat sales have a median of $8,050, against $7,400 for the 29 that sold on Bring a Trailer. Eight of those Cars & Bids Beats were listed out of Ceres, California, which is apparently where Beats come from now.
Auction 1 of 3 • Cars & Bids • Spokane, WA • Ended Feb 29, 2024
The $6,969 Dealer Beat That Stayed Mostly Stock
Our first contestant is a 1991 Beat in Carnival Yellow with a black soft top and zebra cloth, sold at no reserve on Cars & Bids. It shows 65,900 kilometers, about 41,000 miles, and it has a Montana title. The selling dealer bought it the month before.
The factory stuff is all there: 13-inch wheels, air conditioning, power windows and the 6-disc CD changer. The mods are short: an aftermarket exhaust, a Nardi steering wheel, a shift knob and a Kenwood head unit. The timing belt and water pump were replaced in January 2024.
Then the listing gets honest. Rust and corrosion in the trunk wells and engine bay. The fuel and coolant temperature gauges don't work, though replacements come with it. The exhaust temperature warning light is on, which the dealer blames on the exhaust. Old tires, a ding in the driver's door and a rip in the driver's seat bolster.
It sold for $6,969 after six bids. Seven weeks earlier, a 48,000-mile yellow Beat with zebra seats sold on Bring a Trailer for $9,200.

What the Auction Says vs. What It Means
| The Auction Says | Points | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| Carnival Yellow with zebra cloth | + Nice | The spec. The one on the posters. |
| 41,000 miles, mostly unmodified | + Nice | Exhaust, wheel, knob and radio. All reversible in a weekend. |
| Timing belt and water pump done January 2024 | + Nice | The one service you don't want to inherit. |
| No reserve | + Nice | The market set the price, not the seller's feelings. |
| Rust in the trunk wells and engine bay | − Pipe | On a mid-engine car, the engine bay is the middle of the car. |
| Dead fuel and temp gauges, warning light on | − Pipe | The replacement gauges are in the box. Installing them is your weekend. |

Auction 1 • The verdict
Nice Price. Bring a Wire Brush.
This was the cheapest and most original of the three, and it sold about $500 under the 2024 median. The rust disclosure is why.
If the trunk wells are surface rust and not holes, the buyer got a clean-spec yellow Beat with a fresh timing belt for less than most of the market.
What I'd have paid: $7,500, after a look in the trunk.

Auction 2 of 3 • Bring a Trailer • Cambridge, MA • Ended Apr 14, 2025
The $7,700 Beat That Went Back to the Same Store
Contestant two is a 1992 Beat in yellow with zebra-print cloth, sold at no reserve on Bring a Trailer with a clean Massachusetts title. It shows 22,000 kilometers on the chassis, about 14,000 miles.
This one has been here before. It was imported in 2017, and the seller bought it on Bring a Trailer in January 2018 for $6,637.
In between, it got busy. A replacement engine was rebuilt and installed around 2020, with new rings, rod bearings, timing belt, water pump and distributor. It also has a limited-slip differential, Mugen coilovers, staggered Citta wheels, an aluminum radiator, an aftermarket exhaust and a MOMO wheel. The original engine comes along too. The seller notes it had blow-by.
Then the honest part: the aftermarket front bumper cover is cracked, there are scratches, and there's corrosion on the rocker-panel seam welds. The previous owner thought parts of it had been repainted; the seller says it's just the bumper covers.
Sixteen bids. $7,700.

What the Auction Says vs. What It Means
| The Auction Says | Points | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow with zebra-print cloth | + Nice | The spec again. |
| About 14,000 chassis miles | + Nice | Low. The engine's miles are a separate conversation. |
| Limited-slip, Mugen coilovers, rebuilt engine | + Nice | Someone already spent the fun money. |
| No reserve, sold on BaT before | + Nice | Paper trail, price history, no surprises about where it came from. |
| Replacement engine; the original has blow-by | − Pipe | Not the engine it left Japan with, and the spare is a boat anchor. |
| Cracked bumper cover, rocker seam corrosion | − Pipe | Plastic is cheap. Seam rust isn't. |

Auction 2 • The verdict
Nice Price, Barely. Dead Center of the Market.
It sold for exactly the 2025 median, with more go-fast parts than anything else here. The limited-slip and coilovers alone are real money.
The catch is the engine. Rebuilt is good. Replacement is fine. But a buyer who wants a stock, matching car should keep scrolling, and a buyer who wants to drive it hard just got a deal.
What I'd have paid: $8,000.

Auction 3 of 3 • Cars & Bids • Yorba Linda, CA • Ended Jun 5, 2026
The $9,100 California Beat With a Montana Title
The last one is a 1991 Beat in Carnival Yellow with zebra cloth and a black soft top, sold at no reserve on Cars & Bids. The metric odometer shows 75,800 kilometers, about 47,100 miles. It's in Yorba Linda, California, and it's titled in Montana to the seller's LLC. Montana: proudly titling cars it has never met.
The seller bought it in April 2026 and added about 450 miles before listing it. The big service was done in June 2025: head gasket, valves, timing belt and radiator cap.
Mods are first-generation CRX Si wheels with custom graphics, an NRG steering wheel and MOMO pedals. The factory steering wheel comes with it. The factory road wheels aren't on the included-items list.
Then the honest part: scuffs, chips and cracks around the outside, a ding on the driver's quarter panel, weathered trim, a tear in the driver's seat, and the A/C and stereo don't work.
Thirty bids. $9,100. That's the second-highest Beat sale of the last 12 months.

Auction 3 • The scorecard
What the Auction Says vs. What It Means
| The Auction Says | Points | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| Carnival Yellow, zebra cloth, 47,000 miles | + Nice | The spec, and normal miles for a Beat. |
| Head gasket, valves and timing belt in 2025 | + Nice | The expensive stuff is already done. |
| Beautiful photos, no reserve | + Nice | Great photos sell cars. That's a compliment to the photographer. |
| Owned two months, about 450 miles | − Pipe | A flip. Nothing wrong with that, but the seller doesn't know the car well. |
| Dead A/C and stereo, torn seat, chips and a ding | − Pipe | Normal 35-year-old kei car stuff. Still costs money. |
| CRX wheels, factory wheels not listed | − Pipe | Collectors want the originals. Good luck finding a set. |

Crack Pipe, Mildly. You Paid for the Photographer.
Same color, same seats and about the same miles as the other two, and it brought $1,400 to $2,100 more. The 2025 engine work is worth something. The photos were worth more.
Meanwhile it has dead A/C, a dead stereo, a torn seat and somebody else's wheels. Over the last 12 months, $8,200 bought the middle of the market.
What I'd have paid: $8,500.

The scoreboard
Three Yellow Zebras, Ranked
| The Auction | Sold For | Verdict / What I'd Have Paid |
|---|---|---|
| 1991 Beat, 41k, Spokane, WA (C&B) | $6,969 | Nice Price. $7,500. |
| 1992 Beat, 14k chassis, Cambridge, MA (BaT) | $7,700 | Nice Price, Barely. $8,000. |
| 1991 Beat, 47k, Yorba Linda, CA (C&B) | $9,100 | Crack Pipe, Mildly. $8,500. |
Overall pick: Spokane. Lowest price, most original, fresh timing belt and everything scary was disclosed up front. Just look in the trunk.
Over the last 12 months, Honda Beats sold for a median of $8,200 across 13 auctions on both sites. If you're paying more than that, the car had better have a reason.
