If MoneyWasn't a Thing
Dissent Off-Road put a brand-new LX 700h on 74 Weld portal axles and 37s. I have one question, and it isn't "how much." It's "does it come in black?"
The fever dream, continued
I Saw One at Cruise Moab. I Haven't Recovered.
Back at Cruise Moab 2026, I stood on the vendor floor having a full mental tug-of-war between an LC 250, a GX 550, a 200 on 40s and an LX on portals. I called the portal LX "the fever dream." I meant it as a compliment and a warning.
Now Dissent Off-Road has published the whole build sheet for their LX 700h Overtrail on 74 Weld portals, and the fever is back. So let's play a game. Money isn't a thing. The bank is a suggestion. My accountant (me) is on vacation.
What would I do with an LX 700h on portals? Everything. Twice.

What they built
Portals, 37s and a Tuxedo
The base truck is a 2026 Lexus LX 700h Overtrail: a 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 hybrid making 457 horsepower, a 10-speed automatic and Lexus's off-road-focused Overtrail trim. It's already a serious truck from the factory. Dissent looked at that and said, "Cute."
Then they bolted on 74 Weld portal axles. Portals move the wheel hub below the axle centerline with a gear set in each hub, so you get more ground clearance, gear reduction and room for big tires without a giant lift. Dissent says they've done about 40 sets of 74 Weld portals on GX and LX trucks and that they're the only shop doing them on the 700h.
On those portals: Volk Racing TE37s wrapped in 37-inch Nitto Terra Grapplers. Dissent says the wheel and tire combo weighs about 94 pounds a corner. Their words: "That's insane for a wheel/tire package. Absolutely madness." I agree, and I want it.
Everything else is Dissent: a low-profile modular front winch bumper with a ComeUp 12.5 winch, a rear bumper that keeps the factory hitch, aluminum sliders with a skid over the AHC hydraulics, a full aluminum skid system, custom fender liners, a roof rack with Pelican cases and dual snorkels in burnt bronze. Baja Designs and Rigid handle lights. Power Brake handles the stopping. They kept Lexus's Active Height Control, too, which means this thing still kneels for you like a butler.

The part I shouldn't do
Let's Do the Math Anyway
I'm a CPA. I can't help it. Here's roughly what's on this truck, with the honest prices where they're public and honest jokes where they aren't.
| The Build Sheet | Damage |
|---|---|
| 2026 Lexus LX 700h Overtrail, MSRP | $115,735 |
| 74 Weld portal axles (their LC250 and GX 550 kit lists at $17,000; LX pricing isn't posted) | ~$17,000+ |
| Dissent front winch bumper, rear bumper, sliders, aluminum skids, roof rack, dual snorkels, fender liners | "Don't ask" |
| ComeUp Solo 12.5rs Trail Edition winch | $1,981 |
| Volk TE37 wheels and 37-inch Nitto Terra Grapplers | Several grand |
| Baja Designs S8 bar, S2 fogs, S2 reverse lights, Rigid rock lights | Several more grand |
| Power Brake X-Line front big brake kit | Yes |
| Pelican cases, ADGU drawers, custom 12V wiring | Also yes |
| Install, break-in service and alignment | The part where you stop checking |
| Napkin total | Probably $160K+ |
Prices from Lexus's listed MSRP, 74 Weld's posted portal kit price and the product prices on Dissent's build page. The total is my guess, not a quote. Dissent's own quote form starts at "under $25K" and tops out at "$100K+," which tells you something.

The real question
Does It Come in Black?
Dissent's truck is white, as you can see above. It's beautiful. I would still ask the question every car guy asks the moment he sees anything nice: "Does it come in black?"
Good news: yes. Lexus lists the LX 700h Overtrail in Earth, Nori Green Pearl, Manganese Luster, Eminent White Pearl and Caviar, which is Lexus-speak for black. So the dream spec is Caviar on bronze TE37s, burnt bronze snorkels, black stainless hardware and 37s. A black LX on portals looks less like an overlander and more like it's here to repossess your Range Rover.
Is a black truck smart for camping in the desert? No. Does it matter if money isn't a thing? Also no.
Reality check
Back in My Driveway
Meanwhile, my actual Lexus is a 1997 LX450: triple locked, turbocharged, big, fat and slow, with the acceleration of continental drift. It has no portals, no Active Height Control and no butler mode.
The funny part is that the LX450 and this LX 700h are the same idea 30 years apart: a Land Cruiser in a nicer suit that's secretly better off-road than anyone at the country club expects. The new one just does it with portals, 457 horsepower and a build sheet longer than my tax return.
If money were no object, I'd have the black one by spring. Since money is very much an object, I'll keep my 80 Series, keep feeding my Fund the 40 jar and keep staring at Dissent's photos at night like they're a vacation brochure.

Dissent's build page has the full gallery and every part on this truck. If you build one in Caviar, call me. I'll bring the camera, and I'll bring the drool towel.
