The LC250: Not Quite a "Real" Land Cruiser, But Way Better Than Your 4Runner

I finally got my hands on the new 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser (LC250) at the XO Overland Ranch, and let’s just say the odometer was practically still in the womb—it only had 35 miles on it.

There’s been a lot of internet chatter about whether this "Prado-lite" deserves the legendary badge. Is it a "real" Land Cruiser? In the traditional, heavy-duty 70 or 300 series sense... maybe not. But is it a massive step up from a 5th gen 4Runner? Absolutely. It feels more refined, the tech is lightyears ahead, and the interior doesn't feel like it was designed in 2010.

Heritage vs. Base: The Identity Crisis

Walking around the ranch, the visual difference is striking. The Heritage Edition (with those round headlights) gives you all the warm, fuzzy nostalgia vibes, while the base model looks like it’s ready for a more utilitarian life. Both look mean, but if you're going for that classic Cruiser aesthetic, the Heritage is the clear winner.

Cheating with Crawl Control

We put it through its paces on the flex test and some technical climbs. The articulation is solid, but the real star (or villain, depending on your ego) is the Crawl Control.

Honestly? It felt like cheating. I just pointed the wheels and let the computer do the heavy lifting. It’s so smooth and capable that it almost takes the sport out of off-roading—almost. It’s the perfect "easy button" for when things get sketchy on the trail.

The Verdict

It might be the smaller sibling in the global Land Cruiser family, but for what most of us actually do—overlanding, trail riding, and the occasional Bozeman coffee run—the LC250 is a powerhouse. It’s refined, it’s capable, and it’s a blast to drive.
