The Middle Forkof the Judith

A limestone canyon in the Little Belts, a road that crosses the river over and over, and two trips three years apart.

The Wettest Road in the Little Belts

South of Utica, the Middle Fork of the Judith River cuts a canyon through the Little Belt Mountains, with limestone cliffs on both sides and a road that crosses the river again and again. onX counts 27 crossings, depending on runoff.

We ran it in June 2021 and again in June 2024. Same river, very different water.

The Route

According to onX, you start in Utica, head south on Pigeye Road to Sapphire Village, then follow the Middle Fork Road west and northwest up the canyon. Past the Yogo Creek crossing, you need high clearance. It’s a single-lane road with ruts, a few 18- to 24-inch ledges, overgrown branches that will pinstripe your paint and very few places to pass. It ends at a private property gate.

Plan on at least 17 miles and five hours round trip. Dispersed camping is allowed along the road, and you can reserve the Judith River Ranger Station on recreation.gov for a weekend.

2024: More Water

Three years later, we went back in June with a bigger group and a lot more water in the river. This time I brought TRPLOK, my triple-locked 1997 Lexus LX450. Photographer Ben Reed came along and got down in the river for the shots below.

Know Before You Go

Water. Depth changes a lot with runoff. Early summer can be deep. Walk any crossing you’re not sure about.

Stay on the route. The Middle Fork is a Wilderness Study Area, and the road exists mainly for access to private inholdings in the canyon. Wild Montana reports the old crossings were dumping sediment into the river and hurting the fishery. Wild Montana, Trout Unlimited and partners spent four years rerouting parts of the road and rebuilding banks and crossings, and MTPR reported the project wrapped up in 2023. onX’s most recent report says the original route is closed and a new one is in use. Drive the current route and nothing else.

Check conditions. Reports have ranged from open to impassable crossings, so check with the Forest Service before you go.

Utica. Start or finish at the Oxen Yoke Bar.
