Hearts on the Hood

This was mine: an all-black 1999 Miata I called the Love Miata. Black paint, black 15x9 track wheels, race number 13, and a hood covered in color-shift hearts, every one placed by hand. In the light they shifted color. At night, color-changing RGB underglow finished the job.

Custom koi no yokan (恋の予感) decals rode on the hood and above the rear center brake light. It’s a Japanese phrase for the feeling when you first meet someone that you’re going to fall in love. Not love at first sight. The premonition of it. The rearview mirror said “Drive like someone loves you.” Add the WAIFU plates and there was no mistaking what this car was about.

The Curse

Here’s the part nobody believes. The car was jinxed. Any woman in a relationship who rode in it would leave her boyfriend soon after. It happened so often it stopped being a coincidence.

So the Love Miata got a house rule: if you weren’t single, you didn’t ride. Race number 13 on a car that was already cursed. In hindsight, subtle.

Miata vs. Fiat

Eventually I sold it. That wasn’t the end. I ran against it a couple of times at autocross in my Fiat 124, which is its own kind of strange: lining up against a car you know every rattle of.

Two years later the new owner offered to sell it back to me, pretty cheap. I said no. I know what that car had been through. Some loves you let go.
